Anybody check out "Caddy for Life" on the Golf Channel! This is the poignant story of Bruce Edwards, tour caddy for Tom Watson and for a two year stretch, Greg Norman. The brothership that developed between Bruce and Tom made this story very touching. Anyuone who knows me also knows I am a huge Tom Watson fan. But this story put a whole different light on the man I thought I knew quite well. To see Tom show emotion for Bruce and to credit Bruce with believing in Tom and his ability to win shows you how far the player/caddy relationship really goes. Watching this program is time well spent.
Bridgestone Ball Fitting: Let me share a story. In January, 2009, while wintering in Port St. Lucie, our group picked up a player from New York City. He didn't look like that much of a player, but he had all the latest equipment (I found out later his buddy owned a golf store in NYC). He hit a strong tee shot off #1 that ended up about 50 yards ahead of my tee shot. Fluke, I thought. So on #2 I smoked a tee shot, the Bronx Bomber hit his. I hit 8 iron for my second shot, he hit sand wedge. So, before he hits his second shot I sneak a peak at the golf ball he was playing. The ball was a Bridgestone 330 RX. Coincidentally before the round, one of the players in my group had given me a Bridgestone 330 RX. He had bought a dozen before he came down from Georgia, and prior to the round he had tossed me one. For the better part of a year I had been playing the TaylorMade TP Red and was quite satisified. But what the heck, I figured that somewhere down the road I would give the RX a test. Well down the road became the 3rd tee. The Bomber hit his tee shot, I hit mine, now he was only 15 yards ahead of me. I became a convert. Remember, the only piece of equipment you use on every shot is your golf ball.
Watching the Memorial and the endless rain delays was gut wrenching. You've got to feel for Jack, seems as if every year he gets the wettest week of the summer. But he did get the finish he wanted. The next generation of players seems to be at Tiger and Phil's doorstep. Rory, Rickie and Ryo are banging on the door, and Sergio seems to be a name of the past at 30. To Phil and Tiger, lead, follow or get the heck out of the way.
